Selecta's Lucy Aims For Swimming Glory Down Under

UK, April 2008

Lucy Gould

Business development executive Lucy, 29, will be flying to Australia to take part in the 12th FINA World Masters Swimming Championship, the biggest event in world swimming from competitors over the age of 25. More than 8,000 competitors are set to battle it out in the event, which takes place from 17-25 April at the Challenge Stadium in Perth, Western Australia.

Lucy has been swimming competitively since the age of five for her local club Northgate in her hometown of Bridgnorth, Shropshire, winning several country events and representing England Schools against France and Germany. Her prowess in the pool for Northgate this year enabled her to qualify for the World Masters Swimming Championship and needing, £2,000 to make to trip 'down under', she approached Selecta to see if the company could help.

"It has always been an ambition of mine to qualify for the World Masters Swimming Championship and I was so excited when I managed to achieve it this year," explains Lucy. "I decided to ask Selecta if they would be interested in sponsoring me and they were only too happy to help. I'm really grateful for Selecta's support and I can't wait to get there and get in the pool!"

After spending several days training in the competition pool before the Championship gets under way, Lucy will be swimming for glory in five seperate events - the 100 metres crawl, 100 metres backstroke, 50 metres backstroke, 50 metres butterfly and 50 metres front crawl. Lucy is also hoping a recent arm injury won't hamper her bid for sucess.

"I suffered an injury to a tendon in my arm a couple of weeks ago which I've been having physiotherapy on," says Lucy. "It's still giving me a bit of discomfort but i'm determined that it won't stop me taking part. It's going to be difficult as I will be competing against some of the world's top senior swimmers but I'm going to give it 110 per cent.

Lucy has done exceptionally well to qualify for this event - to us she is a winner already," says Selecta sales and marketing director Jonathan Barr. "We're delighted to be sponsoring her and I'd like to wish her the best of luck for the competition on behalf of everyone at Selecta."
