We support our Community!

UK, April 2010

As part of Our Sustainable Approach, we have supported five more employee initiatives and projects through Selecta in the Community.

…supported the YMCA in High Street West Bromwich

Selecta’s Midlands Team Leader, Shirley Spicer is involved in voluntary work at YMCA High Street West Bromwich, which is for young homeless adults between 16 to 25 years old. The volunteers have set up a participation evening which aims to bring new and existing residents together for them to interact and support each other during their time at YMCA.

Selecta is happy to have supported the YMCA by providing £200 for the volunteers to develop the participation evenings further with additional projects like art classes and a theatre trip for the residents.

…provided funds for the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

Selecta’s Relief Merchandiser, Richard O’Neil’s daughter has spent three lengthy periods in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. Whilst staying in hospital, her recovery has been aided by the play specialist on the ward, Pat Devine, who ensures the children have toys and games to keep them entertained and distracted while vital treatment is carried out.

The hospital has limited funds to buy new play equipment and the play specialist personally funds a lot of the equipment herself. Selecta is proud to provide £200 to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for the play specialist to purchase new play equipment to aid the children’s recovery.

… supported the Incredible Years Parenting Programme

One of our employees attends the Incredible Parenting Programme which provides parents with the support and tools to deal with their children who have been affected by domestic violence. It’s a 12 week course for improving relationships within a family and focuses on children aged between 2 and 8 who are too young for counseling.

The Incredible Parenting Programme is struggling to continue the course in Basingstoke due to the lack of funding. Selecta is proud to have supported the Incredible years parenting programme with £200.

…delivered a memorable Christmas for Polish Orphanage

Selecta’s National Account Manager, Ralph Francis’s wife, Sarah works at St Joseph’s primary school in Chalfont St Peter, which has links to a boys’ orphanage in South West Poland. The nuns who run the orphanage do a fantastic job caring for the boys, but they receive limited funding and needed basics such as clothes, toiletries, stationery and toys.

In 2008 St Joseph’s donated presents for Christmas and due to the overwhelming response they received they wanted to do the same for 2009 but needed help to deliver the gifts. Selecta is proud to have been able to make this happen by funding the trip and donating one of our vans to deliver the gifts.

Selecta team up with St Joseph's school

Ralph Francis, who delivered the gifts direct to the orphanage said: “I would personally like to thank Selecta and St Joseph’s for supporting the orphanage. I can honestly say that seeing the boys’ faces and hearing their shouts of joy and happiness when receiving the presents will remain with me forever. Everyone at the orphanage sends a huge message of thanks and says our support means so much to them.”

…provided funding for the Tuesday Club in Basingstoke

Charlie Fenner’s, Selecta’s Central Contracts Admin Team member, cousin has learning difficulties and found that there was no activities or clubs locally that she could attend on a weekly basis.
Along with her mum and Auntie they have now set up the 'Tuesday Club' in Basingstoke where her cousin can enjoy weekly activities such as discos, party nights, bingo and fancy dress.

The club has limited funding and requires additional funds for running the club, equipment and activities. Selecta is proud to have supported the Tuesday Club by providing £200.

Selecta in the Community has been set up to support employee projects, initiatives and charities that they are involved in. So far we have supported 14 Selecta in the Community projects.
