Tree planting scheme helps Selecta offset unavoidable carbon emissions
Selecta UK & Ireland is underlining its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint with a successful tree planting scheme that is helping to counter the unavoidable emissions produced by providing vending services to its customers<<
We’re very proud to be working in partnership with Carbon Footprint and the UK Tree Planting Programme as the tree planting scheme allows us to offset the remaining, unavoidable carbon emissions associated with providing our customer’s vending services
Working in partnership with Carbon Footprint, the UK Tree Planting Programme and its customers, the company has planted 695 trees since April 2010. This has resulted in Selecta offsetting approximately 695 tonnes of carbon over a tree’s natural life through a Verified Carbon Standard project (VCS).
The tree planting scheme is part of Selecta’s ‘sustainable approach’, the company’s long-term commitment to promoting ethical business practices and setting sustainable development goals which are integral to the way they do business.
Last year, Selecta was rewarded for its environmental efforts when it retained ISO14001 certification, demonstrating that it had been able to successfully identify and control the environmental impact of its activities, products and services and continue to improve its environmental performance.
Andy Mee, Managing Director, Selecta UK & Ireland, said: “Selecta is working hard to reduce its carbon footprint through our sustainable approach with sustainable goals like ISO14001 certification and also fleet management expertise, but we recognise we cannot reduce it entirely.
We’re very proud to be working in partnership with Carbon Footprint and the UK Tree Planting Programme as the tree planting scheme allows us to offset the remaining, unavoidable carbon emissions associated with providing our customer’s vending services. All trees planted through this project are in addition to any existing national quota so would not have been planted without our support. It means we are making a significant contribution to reducing our impact on the environment and providing our customers with a more sustainable vending service that helps meet their green targets”.
Paul Bigmore, Senior Consultant, Carbon Footprint Ltd comments, “It’s great to work with companies like Selecta to raise awareness of the benefits of carbon offsetting. The tree planting initiative means native varieties are planted where they are most needed, for example, supplementing hedgerows and in schools for educational purposes. Participating companies can also specify which region their trees are planted.
The scheme also incorporates Tree Buddying™ which means that for each tree pledged, it’s guaranteed that one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent is offset through a Verified Carbon Standard project (VCS). This is in addition to the amount of carbon emissions offset during a tree’s average lifetime of 100 years.
This gives companies the best of both worlds – you receive all the great biodiversity and socioeconomic benefits of tree planting as well as recognition of your carbon management achievements through international best practice.”
Selecta positions itself at the forefront of sustainable vending: this means being the best for clients, the best for consumers and the best at operations. As one of Europe’s leading vending operators, Selecta is responsible for over 35,000 vending machines in the UK and Ireland.
